Johnny Garcia Vasquez grew up in Oxnard, CA and was inspired by his grandfather to be the first in his family to graduate from college; Mr. Garcia Vasquez is a graduate of the University of California Berkeley with an Ethnic Studies Bachelor of Arts degree, and of Oxnard College with a General Studies: Social and Behavioral Sciences Associate of Arts degree.
Mr. Garcia Vasquez’s history demonstrates his active leadership role, exemplary service and hands-on involvement in multiple causes to help students for which he has received accolades and prestigious recognition, including his exemplary leadership at Hueneme High School, Oxnard College, and the University of California Berkeley;
Mr. Garcia Vasquez’s dedicated service includes serving as Fall 2008 Vice President and Spring 2009 President of the Associated Student Government at Oxnard College, 2008-2009 Voting Delegate to the Student Senate of the California Community College Region 6 and as Legislative Intern for former Assembly Member Pedro Nava and Congress Member Barbara Lee; and served on the 2010-2011 Board of Directors of the University of California Student Association; and as a State Legislative Liaison and Direct Action Organizer in the Office of the External Affairs Vice President, and the University of California, Berkeley Associated Student Government; and, was appointed by the Honorable Governor of California, Jerry Brown to serve as the University of California Student Representative to the California Student Aid Commission in November 2011 and was reappointed in July 2012.
He has served admirably as a State Commissioner, Chair of the Student Impact Committee, and Commission spokesperson before the U.S. Department of Education: Negotiated Rulemaking for Higher Education Committee; and Mr. Johnny Garcia Vasquez devoted time and effort to ensure access to higher education for countless students throughout California’s diverse student populations.
Currently, he resides in Oxnard, CA and is working to improve the quality of life for our local youth as the Ventura County Youth Organizer for Future Leaders of America, Inc.
